My Heart to Yours – The Critical Event

Matthew 9:36-38

Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  “Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

What an exciting time at Good News Church!

We had over 2100 people attend our Easter services. We have been seeing people come to faith in Christ week by week. There are homes going up all over our county and people moving in who need Jesus. On April 17 we open our new and absolutely beautiful WGV facility. What a harvest opportunity.

I am often asked, “Is the facility larger enough? Will there be enough parking?” But the question no one asks me is, “Will we have enough small groups to welcome the people who will come?” This is what I pray for and would encourage you to do the same.

Healthy church growth is based on our ability to provide care for people. We want to grow in a healthy way. We want to see those won to Christ have a place to belong, to grow, and be transformed.

Good News is an Evangelism – Biblical Community church. Our two great passions are to see people reached by the gospel and then transformed by the gospel in Biblical Community! We believe when someone comes to faith in Christ, there old friends don’t cheer them on, “Way to go! Praise the Lord! Maybe we need Jesus too!” Far too often, they try and pull us back, “O you are too good for us now, aren’t you? Are you too holy for us now? Come on back and have fun”. We want to provide them a small group where they can make new friends who can help pull them to Jesus, to gospel transformation.

Our Purpose: To reach and transform people, by the power of the gospel, in biblical community.

Years ago, Krystal opened in St. Augustine on US 1 south and for a month there was a mile long line of cars waiting to buy their food. Today, Krystal rents some of its parking lot to Ned’s. Then I go by Chick-fil-A and it is has been serving food for years and there is still a line of people lined up to buy food.

We want to be like Chick-fil-A and not Krystal. We want those who come to be reached and transformed. We want them to have such a great experience they invite their friends to come. So this week, as you get excited about this new chapter in Good News and the opening of this new facility, pray for small group workers. Pray that those who are leading would continue and pray for more and more to step up so we make room for new people and experience healthy church growth.

I’ll never forget being at a leadership conference where the speaker asked the question, “What is the critical event at McDonalds?” People had all kinds of answers and then he said, “The exchange of money for food is the critical event. Everything at McDonalds is aimed at that event.” My question to you is, “What is the critical event at Good News?”  Many would say, “When a person is saved” or “Opening the new facility” of many other things. I would day, “No, winning someone to Christ, or opening the new facility are huge and wonderful events but the critical event is someone stepping up to lead a small group. When someone steps up to lead a small group, Good News Church can grow in a healthy way by 10 more people. Ten more people now have a place to belong and experience gospel transformation.”

To reach every lost person in our county will require many new shepherds, why not you? Really, why not you? Won’t you step up and help us make room for new people?

Together for the gospel,

Smiley Sturgis
